El pasado simple indica
una acción que comenzó y culminó en un momento específico en el tiempo.

tuvieron lugar una, varias veces o nunca:

sean regulares o irregulares, tienen cinco formas (generalmente llamadas partes principales). Estas formas son:

La diferencia entre un
verbo regular y uno irregular está en la formación del pasado simple y del
participio pasado. Los verbos regulares
son coherentes al tener igual forma tanto en su pasado como en el participio
pasado: ambas formas terminan en –d
o –ed.

Cuando un verbo regular
termina en –e, se le agrega d: (danceèdanced), (poneèphoned).
Cuando un verbo regular
termina en consonante –l o -p, se duplica la última consonante y se le agrega d: (travelètravelled),
(shopèshopped).
Cuando un verbo regular
termina en consonante y –y, se cambia la “y” por “i” y se le agrega ed: (cryècried),
(studyèstudied).
Observaciones finales:
Las formas negativas e
interrogativas de los verbos en pasado requieren del auxiliar DID, sin importar si el verbo es
regular o irregular. El auxiliar DID
indicará, entonces, que el verbo se encuentra en tiempo pasado.
Cuando se usa el
auxiliar DID, el verbo debe aparecer
en la forma infinitivo.
En oraciones negativas,
el auxiliar DID se coloca entre el sujeto
y la negación.
El did DID se puede contraer en DIDN’T.
En preguntas, el
auxiliar DID se coloca antes del
sujeto o pronombre.
